Buddhist sculptures found in UP village
A farmer has found several Buddhist sculptures including a 100kg headless statue of Lord Buddha, wh ile digging at his field in Mainpuri district's Gwaltoli village. Sources said the sculptures and the broken idol of Buddha be long to the 2nd century AD rule of King Kanishka. According to local ex perts, the Buddha statue is carved out of a yellow stone. It was found along with 11 other small and big idols from the fields of farmer Manoj Yadav “As the statues are pre cious, we have informed se nior officers who would con tact the officials of the Archaeological Survey of India so that they are properly preserved,“ Kotwali SHO told TOI.
R P Singh, associate professor at Chaudhary Charan Singh Post-Graduate Degree College, Saifai (Etawah), said, “The statues belong to King Kanishka's peri od. Earlier in October, ancient idols of Lord Shiva were found from Asyoli village, which is about a kilometre from Gwaltoli.“
