NEW DELHI: In its 102 years, the Harcourt Butler Senior Secondary School on Mandir Marg in central Delhi has had quite a few colourful moments. There was, for instance, the occasion when the students marched to Gole Market in support of Mahatma Gandhi’s call to the British to quit India. But perhaps it was never more brightly coloured than today, when its walls have been covered with art and its rooms named after prominent global figures, such as Rabindranath Tagore, Leonardo da Vinci and American pop artist Keith Haring.
Principal Neera Rao is more than happy. “As a government-aided institution, we don’t have funds for brightening up the school. But Delhi Street Art and its founder Yogesh Saini made my dream come true. He had a great concept and executed it for free,” she smiled.
Delhi Street Art started planning the aesthetic makeover three months ago. It invited artists and volunteers on various occasions to add their own imaginative touches to the school walls. The aim was not only to put up multi-hued motifs, but also to inspire creativity among students and faculty. An unused portion in the primary school, for example, was taken over to create an interactive corridor and filled with wall art, art installations, sculptures, canvas paintings and calligraphy. Over 100 artists contributed to this effort.
But the endeavour is not only about adorned walls. On Monday, DSA began an art show titled ‘The Studio’ at the school. Saini told TOI, “We want to promote a creative learning environment for the students and will later hold workshops on painting, sculptures, wall art and graffiti.”
