Jangipur Subdivision

Northern subdivision of Murshidabad District, Bengal, lying between 24 degree 19' and 24 degree 52' N. and 87 degree 49' and 88° 21' E., with an area of 509 square miles. The subdivision is divided into two parts by the Bhagirathi, the land to the west of that river being high and undulating, and that to the east a fertile alluvial tract liable to floods. The population in 1901 was 334,191, compared with 317,179 in 1891, the density being 657 persons per square mile. It contains one town, Jangipur (population, 10,921), its head-quarters; and 1,093 villages.
