Remembering John Paul: Timeless contributions of the veteran writer who redefined Malayalam cinema

“You redefined Malayalam cinema.” These were the words that the academy award-winning sound designer Resul Pookutty penned on his social media handles in tribute to the passing away of the veteran screenwriter John Paul. It was pure passion that made the veteran writer John Paul leave his reputed job at Canara Bank and enter the film industry. As John Paul has left for heavenly abode, let's take a look at some of the best works that the maestro writer has contributed to the Malayalam film industry.

Chamaram

There are only a few writers who make it big with their first writing work itself and John Paul is definitely one among those writers as his debut film ‘Chamaram’ got much adulation for its script from the audience. Coupled with the terrific direction from Bharathan, the film ‘Chamaram’ was a trendsetter back in the 80s.

Palangal

Hardly a year after his debut film, John Paul penned down another brilliant script for the film ‘Palangal’ which was directed by the master craftsman Bharathan. The film was released in the year 1981 and also featured some of the most memorable characters played by the actors Nedumudi Venu, Zarina Wahab, KPAC Lalitha, and Bharat Gopy.

Oru Minnaminunginte Nurunguvettam

John Paul teamed up again with Bharathan for the film ‘Oru Minnaminunginte Nurunguvettam’ and the film also bagged two Kerala State Film Awards. The film told the story of an elderly teacher couple played by the ace actors Nedumudi Venu and Sharada who accepts their family friend’s daughter as their own daughter since they didn't have any children. The film has one of the best emotional endings of all time in Malayalam cinema.

Athirathram

When the two legends IV Sasi and John Paul teamed up for the movie ‘Athirathram’, it gave birth to Mammootty’s iconic smuggler character Tharadas. The film released in 1984 also had Mohanlal playing a pivotal role as a police character who is on a hunt to catch Tharadas. ‘Athirathram’, released in 1984 was a huge box office success during the time.

Yathra

The 1985 Mammootty starrer ‘Yathra’ proves that John Paul is a master at handling emotions coupled with an engaging screenplay that packs memorable characters. Mammootty played the lead role in the film which was directed by Balu Mahendra.
