Chennai 2026: K Bhagyaraj, director, actor, screenwriter, composer and novelist, who shaped Tamil cinema across five decades, passed away Saturday in Chennai. He was 73.

Born Krishnaswamy Bhagyaraj on Jan 7, 1953, his first encounter with a film set came in 1973, when he slipped into the shoot of K S Gopalakrishnan’s comedy ‘Vandhaale Magaraasi’. He posed as set staff and helped move cameras and equipment.

He worked with K Bharathiraja as assistant director on ‘Kizhakke Pogum Rail’ and wrote dialogues for ‘Sigappu Rojakkal’. Even as he made his directorial debut with ‘Suvarilladha Chiththirangal’ (1979), he debuted as hero in Bharathiraja’s ‘Puthiya Vaarpugal’ and wrote the screenplay and dialogues, while acting for B V Balaguru’s ‘Kanni Paruvathile’. In later years, he played supporting roles in movies, including Dhanush’s Kuberaa (2025).
