Lacchu Maharaj - The classical dancer

Lacchu Maharaj, born in 1907 in Lucknow, was a noted Indian classical dancer and choreographer of Kathak

He choreographed the dance sequences in movies like Mahal, Mughal-e-Azam, Chhoti Chhoti Baten, and Pakeezah Lacchu Maharaj was also the founder of the Kathak Kendra started by the Uttar Pradesh Government in Lucknow

He was the one who was awarded the Sangeet Natak Akademi Award in 1957, not the tabla maestro

It would've been his 110th birthday today as he died in 1978.

Lakshmi Narayan Singh, known as Lacchu Maharaj, was born on October 16, 1944, in Banaras to a family of musicians and it would've been his 74th birthday today

Early life

Lacchu Maharaj started performing at an early age and trained under his father, Vasudev Maharaj.

At the tender age of eight, the musician while performing in Mumbai caught the attention of the legendary tabla player Ahmed Jaan Thirakwa.

Benaras Gharana

1. He was known for his proficiency in playing the tabla as part of the Benaras Gharana - one of the six most common styles of playing the tabla.

2. It was developed nearly 200 years ago by the legendary Pandit Ram Sahai.

3. The Benaras style makes use of the more resonant strokes of tabla, such as Na (played on the lao), and Din.

Refused Padma Shri

Pandit Lacchu Maharaj was nominated for a Padma Shri. However, he refused to accept the award as he felt that applause from the audience is enough for an artist and he/she shouldn't need anything else.

Solo performances - the most remembered

Lachhu Maharaj was best known for his inherent sense of rhythm which was best exemplified in his solo performances.

Even though he played alongside nearly all the greatest tabla players of his time, his solo performances are the most remembered.

Lacchu Maharaj passed away in July 2016 in Varanasi at the age of 72 after a prolonged illness.
