By 1986 the Indian film industry was the biggest in the world, and had been so for several years. Indian films’ budgets were massive by the standards of all but Hollywood, Hong Kong, the UK and some French films.
And yet when it came to European characters Indian films (except for the few that starred Tom Alter or Bob Christo) had all the charm of small town high-school plays (pantomimes).
All that an Indian actor had to do to play, say, an Englishman was to speak Hindi/ Tamil/ whatever with an imagined British accent.
This was as true of mega-budget films like Maaveeran and Mard as of art films like Sagina.
However, Mard was clearly superior to the other films mentioned. They got a brown wig for Prem Chopra.
