Designer’s Profile: Maheen Karim
By Shehryar E. Qureshi
Shakespeare once said, “Some people are born great, some people achieve greatness, and some people have greatness thrust upon them.” Maheen Karim is an exceptional amalgamation of all three. This modern-day bard-ette of chic was christened with a name that has come to spell fashion royalty in Pakistan (for reference: Maheen Khan and Maheen Kardar); she has a professional pedigree that encompasses a degree from Central St. Martin’s and stints at Giorgio Armani and Escada in London; and she has been showered with prestigious accolades even before entering the consciousness of the public at large.
I wasn’t that long ago that the insiders’ grapevine was abuzz with the news of a new ‘Maheen’ who had just stepped off the boat and was poised to take the fashion industry by storm.
The clothes on these pages, which she has cannily dubbed “occasion wear” for the festive party season this winter, offer a glimpse of her forte: bold cuts and strong lines moulded around muted twinkles of embellishment. As always, the form, and the personality it encapsulates, takes center stage in her aesthetic.
It is fitting this be called Bijoux, for she is a designer who is considered by many to be one of the jewels in the fashion industry’s crown of promising newcomers. Maheen Karim, however, has surpassed the promise, for her success is now a done deed, and her ascension to greatness, guaranteed.
