Innovation & Quality: How these two words made OPPO a grand success in India, September 11, 2018: The Times of India

When OPPO entered India, the country was already a flourishing market for smartphones. But with great offerings and sales soaring, the brand soon came to be in a league-of-its own. With sales on an all time high, more than seven times during FY17, in just about a year, OPPO indicated its dominance in the Indian smartphone market.

But the success did not come as a cinch. With a sharp focus on the Indian market, OPPO has in many ways worked toward achieving the popularity that it enjoys today. In the beginning, it was the brand’s offline retail channels that worked with a massive network of smartphone dealers who ensured to keep the brand on a pedestal. Then came the partnership with India’s leading ecommerce platforms where the brand’s flagships could be exclusively bought. And it’s not just its marketing strategy but the fact that it warranted consumer demands at various price points. With handsets priced at as low as Rs 10,000 going all the way up to Rs 60,000, OPPO has ensured that it delivers huge innovation and an uncompromised quality -- always. Isn’t it proof enough that they have their logo flashed on Indian cricket team’s kits?

OPPO entered the Indian shores at a time when good smartphones came at an exorbitant price while budget smartphones were no more than toys with basic features and low specs. OPPO identified with this issue, and made a name for itself by delivering quality, innovative products that even made the biggies vary of this new player.

OPPO has been focusing on manufacturing camera phones, while innovating mobile photography technology breakthroughs, ushering in an era of selfie beautification. In 2017, OPPO was ranked as the number 4 smartphone brand globally, according to IDC. And today, OPPO provides excellent smartphone photography experiences to over 200 million young people around the world.

OPPO has its roots in China but the company is doing a lot to make it big here in India. Their ‘Make In India’ initiative is truly commendable. The brand has got a green signal from the government to set up their second manufacturing unit in Greater Noida, which will be up and running in 2019. Once ready, the facility will be able to churn out 50 million devices every year. Their first manufacturing unit, also situated in Greater Noida can make 15 million smartphone per year and employees about four thousand people now. Talk about ‘home-grown brands.’
