Rameswaram This temple, dedicated to Lord Shiva, has its roots in the Ramayana. Rama is said to have worshipped Lord Shiva here after the victory over Ravana. It is also one of the 12 jyotirlingas of Lord Shiva, as mentioned in the Shiva Mahapuran.

There are two lingams inside the sanctum Ramalingam, the one built by Goddess Sita and the one brought by Lord Hanuman from Kailasa, called Vishwalingam. Along with Badrinath, Puri and Dwarka, Rameswaram is one of the sites of char dham, the holy sites, as marked by Adi Shankaracharya in the four corners of the country.

The temple was expanded during the 12th century by Pandya Dynasty. The Maratha kings who ruled Thanjavur established chatrams or rest houses all through Mayiladuthurai and Rameswaram between 1745 and 1837 and donated it to the temple.Shaivite saints Appar, Sundarar and Tirugnana Sambandar, have glorified the temple with their hymns.
