A brief biography
Bella Jaisinghani, May 12, 2019: The Times of India
Roshan Taneja, the Dronacharya of the Hindi film industry started an acting course at Pune’s Film and Television Institute of India (FTII).
His students span four generations of artistes, right from Jaya Bachchan, Shabana Azmi, Naseeruddin Shah, Om Puri and Shatrughan Sinha to Anil Kapoor, Govinda, Aamir Khan, Madhuri Dixit, Rani Mukherjee and Karisma Kapoor down to today’s actors like Ranbir Kapoor and Sonam Kapoor.
Taneja was ailing for a prolonged period and passed away in his sleep at 9.30pm. The last rites were performed on Saturday evening at the electric crematorium in Santacruz with actors Anil Kapoor and Govinda in attendance. He is survived by wife Mithika and two sons Rohit and Rahul. Mithika told TOI, “His health went steadily downhill after he suffered a bout of jaundice and then had a fall at home. He had already become weak but then lost mobility as well.” The measure of respect that Roshan Taneja commanded in India’s film industry can be gauged from the fact that the finest artistes the country has produced acknowledge their debt to his training. Shabana Azmi led the fraternity in paying tribute. Rakesh Bedi told TOI, “I owe my professional career to him. He is the pioneer of method acting in India.”
Mithika said her husband had started the acting course in FTII in 1963. “He later left FTII to set up the Roshan Taneja School of Acting in 1975-76.The institute is still running. He has left a robust legacy which we shall take forward,” she said. His son Rohit said, “He was my hero. His passing has filled me with reason to keep his legacy alive and stronger than before. I hope I will be able to do that.”
