Salt-Water Lake

Swamp in the head-quarters subdivision of the District of the Twenty- four Parganas, Bengal, situated about 5 miles east of Calcutta, between 22 28' and 22 $6' N. and 88 23' and 88 28' E., with an area of about 30 square miles. This is a low depression, which is being gradually filled by silt deposits of the tidal channels that intersect it. It serves as a cesspool for the sewage of Calcutta. A portion of the lake at Dhapa is being gradually reclaimed by the deposit of street refuse, which is conveyed out daily from Calcutta by a municipal railway.
