MADHYA PRADESH ‘I don’t know how much I’m worth’
The nexus between politics and big business is evident in Sanjay Pathak’s life. This 43-year-old, a Congress MLA from Vijaraghavgarh constituency of Katni, is one of the richest politicians in the state. He’s a mining baron, owning bauxite and iron ore mines in Katni and Sehora in Jabalpur district and is also into hospitality and education. “The first lease of mines was given to my family in 1922,” he says. “We later applied for iron ore mines in 1956 and it was granted in 1969.” The son of former minister Satyendra Pathak also owns a chain of hotels in Madhya Pradesh called SYNA in Kanha National Park, Pench National Park, Khajuraho and in Jabalpur and Katni. SYNA, in Greek, means two together, he informs. “We recently took an MP Tourism Corporation hotel in Khajuraho on a 99-year lease and are renovating it,” he adds. Pathak, incidentally, is also fond of the latest new models of cars. The politician also has interests in the education sector and owns SYNA schools. “I plan to start low-budget SYNA schools all over the state. But I don’t want to earn profit through them,” says Pathak. Ask him what his worth is, and this consummate politician says deftly, “I really don’t know.”
