Shencottah
Head-quarters of the taluk of the same name in Travancore State, Madras, situated in 8 degree 59' N. and 77 degree 15' E,, on the high road from Quilon across the Ghats to Tinnevelly, from which place it is about 40 miles distant. Population (1901), 9,039, of whom 90 per cent, are Hindus. The Tinnevelly-Quilon Railway enters Tra- vancore through this town. There are several tea and coffee estates in the neighbourhood. About 3 miles to the south are the Kuttalam waterfalls. It formerly belonged to the Rajas of Ilayatatunad and was annexed to Travancore in 1734.
