A backgrounder

The Telangana Thalli, or the Mother of Telangana, has been an emblematic figure talked about by the people of Telangana during their agitation for statehood. Various political leaders and groups had created different forms of Telangana Thalli statues and imagery during the statehood movement. The new official statue of the Telangana Thalli, unveiled on the premises of the state secretariat in 2024, is seen as representing the existence and self-respect of the people of Telangana. The state government has prohibited any changes, modifications, or insults to this official image of the Telangana Thalli, stating that such actions will be treated as a crime. The date of the unveiling, December 9th 2024, coincides with the historic announcement in 2009 that the process of forming a separate Telangana state had begun.
