Town in the Ernad taluk of Malabar District, Madras, situated in 11° 2' N. and 75° 56' E. Population (1901), 5,400. It is the head-quarters of a deputy-tahsildar and a sub- magistrate, and has a weekly market. The place contains the tomb of Taramel Tangal, a noted Mappilla saint. In 1852 Saiyid Fazl, a descendant of the Tangal, was deported to Arabia for instigating the Mappillas to rebel. The trade is in tish, coco-nuts, and areca-nuts.
