Head-quarters of the zamindari tahsil of the same name in the Karvetnagar zamindari in North Arcot District, Madras, situated in 13° 11' N. and 79° 37' E., with a station on the Madras Railway. Population (1901), 3,697. A hill temple, dedicated to Subrahmanyaswami, one of the sons of Siva, is largely frequented by pilgrims, and is held to be next in importance to the famous shrine at Tirumala near Tirupati.
