Road

2021: black-topped

August 5, 2021: The Times of India

The highest motorable road in the world at an altitude of 19,300-feet at Umling La Pass in eastern Ladakh has now been fully black-topped by the Border Roads Organisation (BRO).

“It’s a record in high-altitude road construction. The 52-km long tarmac road through Umling La Pass betters the previous record of a road in Bolivia connecting to its volcano Uturuncu at 18,953 feet,” said a defence ministry official.

Though the basic construction of the road, which connects important towns in Chumar sector of eastern Ladakh, was completed by the BRO a few years ago, it has now been black-topped using new technologies despite challenging conditions due to the tough terrain and temperatures dipping down to - 400 Celsius.

“It will prove to be a boon to the local population as it offers an alternate direct route connecting Chisumle and Demchok from Leh. The road has been constructed at an altitude higher than the Mt Everest base camps. The road is also much above the altitude of Siachen Glacier,” the official added.
