Ahmedabad/Pune : Thirteen-year-old chess player Vivaan Shah achieved the biggest moment in his nascent sporting career, when he attained the world No 1 ranking in the U-13 category as per the latest International Chess Federation (FIDE) rankings released on March 1.
Vivaan achieved his first International Master (IM) norm at the Rudar Round Robin Chess Tournament in Pozarevac, Serbia, held from Jan 28 to Feb 12. He gained 80 rating points, reaching a rating of 2,429. He also crossed the 2400 rating benchmark required for the IM title. To become an IM, a chess player has to achieve three IM norms.
The Surat boy beat a Grandmaster and drew with another in the Serbian toura- ment. He is now targeting the remaining two IM norms, which he plans to achieve by the end of this year.
“My aim is to get remaining two IM norms. Thereafter, I will focus on getting GM norms. We are targeting to achieve this by end of this year,” the youngster said. His coach was full of praise for the boy’s focus. “Vivaan is disciplined and works hard. He finishes the work that I give him on time and is eager to get on with the next assignment. He can still play better and reach further heights,” Swayam Mishra, said.
Prior to the competition in Serbia, Vivaan had competed in the President’s Cup in Tashkent and Qatar Masters 2024 in Doha (Nov-Dec 2024). At the Qatar Masters, he scored 5/9 points, defeating four IMs and drawing with one GM.
