Govt of Delhi and Tree Planting/ Tree Ambulance

The Chief Minister of Delhi, Mrs Sheila Dixit, is a great proponent and supporter of planting trees and is often seen inaugurating tree planting and environmental protection initiatives. The forest cover in Delhi has grown from 300 sq. miles to 300 sq. miles in the last 10 years! In 2007-8 , nine new city forests were created covering 250 hectares and 14 existing forests were intensively planted and the Ridge made more dense. Two bio-diversity parks- the Yamuna Bio-Diversity Park and the Aravali Bio-diversity Park, are currently being developed. Hundreds of thousands of free saplings have been distributed and, through the Green Leap Delhi initiative of the Department of Environment, which commenced in 2011, free saplings can be picked up (and planted anywhere) from the collection centres as follows-

  • BPCL Stations
  • IGL Stations
  • IOCL Stations

In 2010, the Chief minister also flagged off ‘The Tree Ambulance’ service, an initiative by NDMC, for immediate and emergency help to save a tree(s) suffering from lack of water, the effect of storms, termite and fungal infections. Manned by professionals trained at the premier forest institute in Dehra Dun, it holds 5500 thousand liters of water, a chainsaw, tree pruner, sprayer, ladder, water pumps, insecticides and other necessary equipment. Any individual residing in the NDMC area can take their help by simply calling on 41501354 or emailing at director.horticulture@ndmcmail.gov.in.

The New Delhi Municipal Corporation(NDMC).

The NDMC, a much maligned body, does praiseworthy work, looking after 1250 acres with five nurseries, over six major gardens, 122 small parks, 53 roundabouts and 981 CPWD colony parks.
